Scientific researchers have provided strong evidence that the Earth’s climate is warming due to increasing levels of greenhouse gasses (GHG) like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, in the atmosphere. The rising amounts of GHGs are caused in significant part by human activity, including industrial activities

The Global Warming Pollution Control Act establishes greenhouse gas limits and a greenhouse gas reporting system. This bill addresses the critical issue of climate change by directing the Department of Environmental Conservation to establish a GHG emissions limit from all sources in New York State.

New York must replace its piecemeal approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions with a comprehensive limit, as mandated by the Global Warming Pollution Control Act. Doing so sends a clear message to private investors that New York is committed to developing a green economy. It is this private investment that will spur the development and growth of green industries throughout the state, resulting in much-needed jobs and additional revenue sources.

We need your help to convince the full Senate and Assembly that global warming must be addressed. Please join environmental advocates statewide in making your voice heard today!

EPA’s Phase 1 Evaluation Report – Hudson River Dredging Project

http://www.epa.gov/hudson/

On March 8, 2010, EPA and General Electric Company (GE) released the final version of their respective Phase 1 Evaluation Reports for the Hudson River dredging project. These reports replace draft versions of the reports exchanged in mid-January, pursuant to the Consent Decree under which GE performed Phase 1 of the dredging.

EPA’s Phase 1 Evaluation Report is available at www.hudsondredgingdata.com

After completing the first phase of dredging PCB-contaminated sediment in the upper Hudson River, EPA is releasing a detailed technical assessment of the work to a panel of independent scientific experts for their review. The EPA report details the effectiveness of the first phase of dredging, as well as the challenges encountered during the first dredging season. It also lays out the Agency’s modifications to the engineering performance standards for dredging resuspension, residuals, and productivity proposed for the second phase of the project, set to begin in 2011.

Residents Continue To Recycle In Westchester

Friday, April 16th, 2010

26 students, government organizations to be honored for their effort at Earth Day Celebration Sunday

Last year, Westchester County residents and businesses reduced the amount of garbage they put out for disposal by almost 100,000 tons — helping the environment and saving themselves tax dollars.  About half of all garbage generated by residents was recycled, exceeding the state recycling goal of 40 percent.

At the annual Earth Day Celebration Sunday, Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino will recognize 26 local governments, school children and others from the community for their efforts to help make this happen.

The awards presentation will take place at 1 p.m. at the county’s Earth Day 2010 celebration, which is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 18 at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla.

The county and its taxpayers save $85 for every ton of garbage that it doesn’t have to incinerate. Last year, the amount of municipally collected garbage was 842,000 tons – down from 941,000 in 2008. The amount recycled was 421,459 tons.  The recycled materials get sold for cash and the non-recycled materials get turned into electricity in the county’s waste-to-energy facility.
